Drawing a surfer – faux-engraving digital painting
This blogpost is a bit like a summer postcard! I try to experiment with new inspiration and techniques during summer, so there you have a series of surfers (I blame Brittany for this inspiration). I worked on my “faux-engraving” style that you may have already noticed in previous posts. Sometimes I draw traditionally, with ink on paper, sometimes I do a digital painting. The results are very similar.
Below are a few previous exemples of this style:
I worked on a very short series of resting surfers. I began with this annotated sketch :
I took pictures of “real” people, and worked from them for my digital painting. I use them as a layer in photoshop, and I draw, digitally, on top of them. Then I remove the photo.
I notice that photography is a growing part of my creative process, but only when I am the one who takes the pictures. I work with slightly overexposed pictures that match my drawing style.
So, there you have, Mr and Mrs surfers.
