Drawing an Embellished W

How to draw an embellished letter

I love illuminated letters so much: they are like a shortcut taking you directly to the world of ‘Once upon a time’ and childhood bedtime stories. Here I am drawing a quite minimalist W. I began with the letter itself, and embellished it with a few patterns.

Materials

For this project, as in the drawing of a cat using just dots, I used very simple tools:

  • a graphite pencil and eraser

  • a black pen

  •  a gold pen.

Step 1 – sketching the letter with pencil

First, I sketched the letter W with pencil. I outlined the letter, then added embellishments and filled the letter with patterns.

In the short video above, this runs from 00:00 to 01:38. It actually took me 5 minutes.

Step 2 – hand-lettering with black ink

Then I proceeded to ink the letter: the outline first, then colouring and ink drawing the pattern.

Less is more. At first I wanted to add more embellishment, and my pencil sketch shows it. But when it came to inking it, I felt that I needed to simplify more.

In the short video above, this runs from 01:38 to 03:08. It actually took me 10 minutes.

Step 3 – adding accents of gold ink to the embellished letter

Last but not least, I added golden accents to the leaves.

In the short video above, this runs from 03:08 to 04:06. It actually took me 7 minutes.

And voilà!

And voilà! In less than 23 minutes, we just drew an embellished letter W, I might use it in my weekly journal for Wednesday! Or maybe keep it as another beautiful page for my sketchbook.

I hope you enjoyed this post. As always, I do not pretend to be a teacher, a seasoned artist or an expert in anything, just a very motivated learner who finds a deep joy in a regular art practice.
